  1. WinU for Windows 95 
  2.  
  3. Windows 95 is great, but itÆs not very secure.  How can stores, schools, 
  4. and libraries allow their computers to be used by the public, yet prevent 
  5. people from changing the configuration of complex computer systems?  How 
  6. can businesses let employees use the software they need to do their jobs, 
  7. yet prevent them from accessing or installing other programs?  How can 
  8. parents control which programs their children use?  How can anybody keep a 
  9. log of which programs were run, by whom, and for how long?

  11. ThatÆs what WinU is for.  WinU is a Windows 95 security access control 
  12. system with time-out and monitoring features, three distinct levels of 
  13. security control, and many flexible configuration options.  ItÆs easy to 
  14. set up, easy to use ...  and virtually impossible to circumvent.

  16. This makes WinU excellent for libraries, schools, and stores that want to 
  17. let the public use certain software without allowing access to the entire 
  18. computer.  Patrons can use all authorized programs, but they canÆt change 
  19. the computerÆs setup or delete important files.  Businesses can use WinU 
  20. to allow employees to run only authorized software, making other programs 
  21. unavailable.  WinU is also ideal for parents who want to allow children to 
  22. use only certain software on the family PC without worrying that they 
  23. might delete the household tax records or access inappropriate files.  You 
  24. can set up a different password-protected WinU desk for every user.  You 
  25. can also password-protect each individual program on a desk.  And you can 
  26. limit the time that any program or desk can be used.

  29. programs on up to 500 desktops, each with its own name, settings, 
  30. passwords, and programs.  You can set the maximum allowed time for each 
  31. program, and for the desk itself.  WinU allows you to individually 
  32. customize each desk's appearance and behavior in a number of ways.  Choose 
  33. the wallpaper, layout style, button placement, fonts, icons, and more.  
  34. You can also set the access and navigation methods allowed on each desk.  
  35. Desks can have "blockout" periods, times when no programs on that desk 
  36. will run.  How about a blockout period on JuniorÆs desk every weekday 
  37. night at dinnertime?

  40. reports.  They make it fast and easy to configure a WinU station to do 
  41. whatever you require, even clone that station onto another computer 
  42. without re-entering anything.  You can update the remote station's 
  43. passwords, time limits, or its entire configuration "on the fly" over the 
  44. network or by disk for non-networked computers.  WinU even has built-in 
  45. license meter management, so you can control how many users can

  62. Installing WinU

  64. To install WinU, run the program install.exe that comes with WinU.  It 
  65. will ask you the folder you would like to install into, the Start button 
  66. group name you prefer, and whether you'd like WinU to run at startup.  
  67. WinU will not install anything to any folder other than the one you 
  68. specify.  It will not change any system files other than the Registry (per 
  69. Microsoft standards).  If you choose to uninstall, simply run the 
  70. uninstaller program.

  90. WinU Remote Administration Kit
  91.  
  92. The WinU Remote Administration Kit consists of a number of tools which 
  93. extend WinU's capabilities and allow the administrator to remotely 
  94. configure and control all WinU computers on the network.  Since they are 
  95. management tools you probably don't want to automatically install these to 
  96. every WinU computer, so they are in a separate \adminkit subdirectory on 
  97. the install disk.

  99. To install the WinU Remote Administration Kit programs, simply copy them 
  100. to any convenient directory.  If you copy them to the same directory as 
  101. the WinU program itself, you can access the regular WinU helpfile 
  102. (WINU.HLP) which includes documentation for these companion programs.  
  103. This is also a handy directory if you need to uninstall, because the WinU 
  104. uninstaller knows how to delete these companion programs as well as WinU 
  105. itself.

  127. Uninstalling WinU
  128.  
  129. WinU includes an "uninstall" component.  When you install WinU, the 
  130. uninstaller is added to WinU's icons on the Start menu as well as to the 
  131. usual "Add/Remove Programs" list.  To uninstall, run the uninstaller.  
  132. When uninstalling, any Remote Administration Kit files in the WinU 
  133. directory are also uninstalled.

  140. is, you can run the program on 30 different dates.  These dates do not 
  141. have to be consecutive calendar days.  If you don't run WinU on a
